Philips

Always a soft spot is the Philips. This set, with a lovely deco style cabinet, so popular with the more discerning second hand car dealers, had a good quality radio section and powerful output stage. This fed a permenant magnet large speaker which had a bakelite HF cone section for the high notes. MonoKnob was a feature of some of the Philips sets of this period (1937). Turning the centre know tuned the set, moving the knob up and down changed the volume, side to side changed the tone and selectivity. This is all fine and dandy until something goes wrong. Most Philips sets used steel wire in the tuning mechanism which became fragile with age and rust. When these break, well………
