Philips X12T740 Portable B&W TV

Customer dropped this little set off. Either gift it to me or bin. Shame to see it trashed, so I thought I would see if something could be done for her. I can remember when I thought stuff from the early ‘70s was modern. Horrifying to thing this set is 47 years old.

Back off and a quick check around for anything nasty. All okay there. Power up with some current limiting and low voltage, nothing untoward, good. Sometimes, running solid sate gear at half power can catch you out. Parts of the circuit may not oscillate for example and transistors can effectively go short circuit. Anyway, up full power, along with a modulated signal from a DVD machine.

This set has quite a comprehensive tuner, VHF and UHF making it useful in Europe and Ireland etc.. Nothing much going on and gone are the days when I could hear the 16Khz line whistle. Being Philips, you have to expect dry joints. After 3 cubit feet of solder we managed to get a raster. The set had been asleep for 30 years or so, so the tube took a little time to come up. Tuned into the modulator and the picture was not too bad. But we had no sound. After flexing the PCB, the sound crackled off and on. Another 15 minutes tapping around and soldering brought no joy. It was then I thought I should push the loudspeaker plug back in. Check the obvious first Seth.

Hello, i have quite the same tv.
The defect is that when i switch on i get only “light” on screen but no video and sound even the classic snow effect.
5 monts ago it was the same situation and then magically it worked and i was able to connect a tuner and see stardard channels. Now i got the same defect but no self “resurrection” . Did you manage just resolder on pcb board ?

    1. Hi. These sets suffer badly with dry solder joints. The fault you have is within the IF stage, as you have no video and sound. I suggest you tap around the main PCB and check connections from the tuner. Not knowing your skill level, press the main board and surrounding areas with a plastic rod and see if you can bring the fault condition off and on. You can then narrow the area.
