Ayon CD10 CD player

Ayon CD10

This rather expensive looking CD player came into the shop, having been upset by a series of power issues where it lived. It was now dead.

The mains input was totally open circuit and the fuse in the socket has failed. With this replaced, power was connected via current limiter. The power taken from the supply seemed to randomly fluctuate. In the worst case, we might have a transformer fault and or faulty supporting components. Hopefully there would be a varistor which had fallen on it’s sward after doing its protective job.

There is a nice warning label on the underside over that says very politely, “Please do not remove cover”. I thought that was quite nice. Being disobedient, I removed the cover to find some very nice high quality bits to play with. The power supply had a good filter board feeding a nice C core mains transformer. None of this silly SMPS rubbish. With the mains transformer disconnected, it was obvious that the Varistor, whilst looking okay, was on its last 2 legs. Fiddly to get at, but replaced. I politely replaced the bottom cover and we were away with the mixer. Nice machine and so it should be at around 8,000€. Oh, forgot to say, a couple of token valves in the audio output.
