I have a soft spot for these. This lovely mature lady came into the office yesterday. Mrs Fender 75. She looked tired, exhausted and had that magical perfume of a well gigged Fender. Dirty, tatty and a foot missing. Just how I like my women. AILF.
I had the delight of frequenting her about 10 years ago when I replaced the power transformer for a 230V primary as opposed to it’s original USA 110V. The autotransformer fitted to the inside of the cabinet added to weight.
The report was that there seemed to be strange operation with the reverb and channel switching. It had also blown a mains fuse. It is always worth looking at the fuse. If it is blackened, that indicates an instant surge or short of some kind. In this case the fuse wire looked in order but was open circuit. This means that it had a slow prolonged torture prior to its final death, a slow increase in current.
So, with the chassis out, wired to a current limit dim bulb supply, we applied the angry pixies. All seemed to be okay, audio was reasonable and current draw was about right. However, when switching between high and low power for the output, the HT current did not seem right and both 6L6Gs showed a prominent blue secondary emission glow. Also noted that the foot pedal LED did not light and the channel select did not work correctly. Now then. This all relates to the negative supply rail for the bias for the output valves. There are several resistors (indicated on one of the pictures) that tend to go bad and or become dry jointed. 820R, 390R and a zener diode 6.2V. In this case, the legs of the 80R resistor had fallen off. I as a matter of course always replace these with wirewound devices. Once this was done, the amplifier worked beautifully. Fantastic sound, great reverb. If I am here in another 10 years time, I hope to see her again for an intimate date.

El informe indicaba que parecía haber un funcionamiento extraño con la reverberación y el cambio de canal. También se había fundido un fusible de red. Siempre vale la pena revisar el fusible. Si está ennegrecido, indica una sobretensión instantánea o un cortocircuito. En este caso, el cable del fusible parecía estar en orden, pero estaba en circuito abierto. Esto significa que sufrió una tortura lenta y prolongada antes de su muerte definitiva: un lento aumento de corriente. Así que, con el chasis desmontado y conectado a una fuente de alimentación de bombilla de baja potencia con límite de corriente, aplicamos los Angry Pixies. Todo parecía ir bien, el audio era razonable y el consumo de corriente era correcto. Sin embargo, al cambiar entre alta y baja potencia de salida, la corriente de alta tensión no parecía correcta y ambos 6L6G mostraron una prominente luz azul de emisión secundaria. También noté que el LED del pedal no se encendía y que la selección de canal no funcionaba correctamente. En fin, todo esto está relacionado con el riel de alimentación negativo para la polarización de las válvulas de salida. Hay varias resistencias (indicadas en una de las imágenes) que tienden a estropearse o a presentar uniones secas: 820R, 390R y un diodo Zener de 6,2 V. En este caso, las patas de la resistencia de 80R se habían desprendido. Por supuesto, siempre las sustituyo por dispositivos bobinados. Una vez hecho esto, el amplificador funcionó de maravilla. Sonido fantástico, gran reverberación. Si vuelvo a estar aquí dentro de 10 años, espero volver a verla para una cita íntima.
