Not seen one of these before. A local guitarist brought this in, saying that it made strange noises when it had been on for a while. Didn’t pay much attention to the controls on the front panel. Plugged in and switched on for a while, sure enough a regular repetitive growling noise was present. With the chassis out and a first inspection, I thought someone had been playing pick and mix with the 4 output valves. However the chassis is designed for 2 x 6L6Gs and 2 x EL34s. Strange. The valves are arranged in a parallel push pull fashion and have controls on the front panel in order that you can swing the drive to either set of valves or both. Guess it depends on the user’s taste in tunes. Both sets of valves have their own bias set ups. In this case, when the amp was hot and the chassis turned upside down, both EL34s were found to be very microphonic. In fact their played their own tune when tapped. A new set was fitted and all was quiet. However, both were running hot, at the upper limit of anode current. The bias was way too low, probably resulting in the early deterioration of the original set. Nicely made amps, good components etc. Any guitarists out there tell me how they feel about the variation between output valve types?
